Japan bullet trains: Wider seat, higher price

A new twist is coming to Japan’s famous shinkansen bullet trains: more room but at a price.

New seating on remodeled cars is going from having three seats on one side if the aisle and two on the other to a two by two arrangement, with the former three seats replaced by two wider ones, configured with a partition, cupholder and an updated tray table designed for laptops.

The wider seats, at a 1200 yen surcharge, about 8 US dollars, are being marketed to business travelers as a way to work on the way to work or meetings.
