Known for its artistic bent, Essaouira is a nearly white old city (Medina) on the Atlantic Ocean. It is a port city, but also used to be a pirate capital, so has a certain excitement to it.
The walled city encloses a lively market (open until 11 pm) bustling with activity. The smells, sounds, and sights flow over you as you explore the town.
The boats and nets in the port make for a picturesque setting, with squawking sea birds swooping around. There is a long promenade as well as a wide beach easily accessible. The water was cold, but certainly swimming was possible.
We learned a lot about Moroccan culture and people as we strolled the streets, noting the low doors (you would bend down to enter; 2 knockers allowed for males and females to be recognized, as well as family versus business) and complete lack of street windows (all windows are to the interior courtyard, precluding displays of wealth or women being visible to a passerby).
The following scenes were taken at night….
I’ve been to Essaouira and loved every minute! Great post!
I have been through these cities, it is really wonderful.
