The headline doesn’t quite reflect the occasion, but it’s literally accurate as Microsoft founder Bill Gates spent part of last Sunday in the Brussels Sewer Museum, celebrating World Toilet Day, an occasion most of us probably didn’t know existed.
Gates took advantage of the occasion, including posting a video, to emphasize the importance of modern sewers in preventing epidemics of diseases such as cholera, and also pointed out that sampling sewer water helps scientists check for the existence and prevalence of viruses such as Covid.
