Yosemite goes sustainable with pizza bags

Yosemite National Park has gone another step in its push for environmental sustainability by requiring its on-site vendors to serve pizza in “lower waste, compostable paper bags” that will save over 100,000 pizza boxes a year.

Actually, the bags are mainly for leftovers: officials pointed out that in the past, pizza was served in boxes that people took to their tables; now the pizza is served directly on re-usable trays, eliminating the boxes. The change also means no more trash cans filled with empty pizza boxes.

Among other changes the park has implemented are eliminating single-use plastic cups and tableware, requiring beverages to be sold in glass or reusable metal containers, compostable sandwich wrappers and recyclable coffee pods.

The federal government has set a timeline to eliminate single-use plastic from all public lands by 2032.
