Exploring Zurich

My Viking River Cruise started in Zurich.

If you are geographically in the know, of course, you realize the river cruise didn’t start there, but the adventure did! Viking often starts at an inland city and brings its guests by motor coach to the ship.

Zurich is a remarkable city and offers history, culture, and beauty. Permanently settled by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago, Zurich has much to offer its visitors.

During the Middle Ages, Zurich gained the independent and privileged status of imperial immediacy and, in 1519, became a primary center of the Protestant Reformation in Europe.

We first enjoyed a scenic cruise of Zurich Lake. An excellent narrative by Viking tour guides offered several descriptions of what we saw, including the home of the late Tina Turner, the view of the city’s famous churches towering above the city, and the Alps framing the far end of the lake.

Next, we enjoyed a walking tour of the once-walled Old Town, including the colorful guild houses that created a fairy-tale setting.

We strolled along the quay of the Limmat River and viewed several churches, including Fraumünster, which ruled the town until 1336; Grossmünster, founded by Charlemagne; and St. Peter’s Church, which boasts the largest church clock face in Europe.

Zurich is a charming city and one I enjoyed exploring.
