Acting under new regulations for short-term rentals in Portugal, Lisbon and Porto have canceled about 30% of the existing licenses for vacation rentals.
Unlike cities which have been cracking down on violations of rules and drawing up new restriction on issuing licenses, the move in Portugal is canceling licenses for places that had official approval, but have not shown that they have rental activity, and therefore should be returned to regular rental use.
In Lisbon, 12,180 licenses submitted proof out of 20,033 registrations, while in Porto a higher percentage showed proof, with 9,170 submissions out of 10,520 licenses. The licenses who have submitted proof will now be reviewed to be sure they are still valid.
