Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Wilderness is one of the most remote places in the United States. And one of the most beautiful. It has some of the tallest peaks on the continent and with neighboring Kluane National Park in Canada forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also, it features one of the largest non-polar ice caps on the planet.
The Park’s Visitor Center is located at its periphery and is easily accessible. It offers interesting information about the area, including:
– A traditional Aboriginal fishing wheel, used to catch migrating salmon on the neighboring Copper River….
– A topographic map of the area gives you some idea of how mountainous it is…..
– There are hands-on displays of local items, like antlers and skulls of some native species….
– And a collection of furs so that you can study the difference in animal pelts….
Other displays include biographies of some of the colorful people who pioneered the area….
The easiest way for most people to see the National Park is to drive the Road to McCarthy and visit the Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark, both of which we’ve previously described on this website.
