Riga’s Central Market, seen above in a night view from the tower of St Peter’s Church, claims to be Europe’s largest indoor market.
We’ll be back later to explore the market itself; for the moment it’s enough to have a glance at the five huge halls that house the market. They were built starting in 1922, partly reusing materials, including the upper roofs, from World War I Zeppelin hangars.
The market replaced an outdoor market that had been operating along the nearby riverbank for nearly four centuries.
Between my last visit years ago andy most recent visit the market has changed a bit. Now one of the hangers sells retail times now. Also another market has half of the area converted to restaurant area which allows you to pick up a meal at the market. Definitely a place to visit in Riga
