My wife and I were enjoying a pleasant after-dinner stroll (passeggiata) in Rome. We were rambling and found ourselves along the historic and beautiful Tiber River by Castel Sant’Angelo, close to St. Peter’s Basilica.
Castel Sant’Angelo was built around 140 AD and over the years has served as both a place of refuge and a military fortress. It houses the remains of Emperor Hadrian (builder of Hadrian’s Wall in the UK). Baroque statues of angels line its approach. It’s an amazing sight at dusk!
Sant Angelo is the setting for one of my favorite operas – Tosca.
