Spain’s Renfe bows to EU ticket rules

It should soon be easier to buy the full range of Spanish rail tickets including specials and discounts on a variety of ticketing platforms such as Trainline and other sellers as Spain’s Renfe rail operator promised EU competition authorities it will now make all content and real-time data available to all.

The EU’s competition rules require that rail and other operators make that information available so that competing sellers, and through them the public, have a full choice of all the best and most accurate prices. In April, Brussels opened an inquiry into Renfe’s practice of withholding portions of the information.

“The European Commission has made commitments by Renfe legally binding under EU antitrust rules,” the EU’s executive arm said in a statement, emphasizing that the commitments are for an indefinite period, and that the EU competition regulators will have the power to fine Renfe 10% of its revenue for any violations.
