Florence plans air terminal with wine

Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci airport is getting a new international terminal, and with it what is almost certainly the distinction of being the only airport anywhere capable of serving passengers house-made wine.

The new terminal, designed by ‘starchitect’ Rafael Vinoly, includes a 19-acre vineyard on the terminal roof, with facilities under the roof for producing wine and aging it in barrels. Tuscan wines are among Italy’s best-known, and a well-known vintner is scheduled to operate the facility.

The airport project, scheduled to be completed in two phases between 2026 and 2035 also involves re-orienting the airport’s main runways by 90 degrees so that they will no longer head straight into nearby hills. The current runway bars most modern jetliners from using the airport.

Aged Rieslings tend to develop a petrol/kerosene note in their aroma … presumably the young wines here will share that trait?   ðŸ™‚
