$1 Billion for U.S. airport upgrades

114 airports across the country got good news last Thursday when the Federal government announced nearly a billion dollars in grants funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act.

The funds are earmarked for a variety of different projects, some of them quite visible—a new 14-gate terminal at Washington’s Dulles Airport and a Concourse B expansion at Salt Lake City—while others are less so, such as $7 million to fund a New Orleans access road that crosses a swampy approach.

The largest piece of money goes to Fort Lauderdale, where the airport’s terminals will be linked past the security area, making connection far easier.

Among the other funded projects are replacements for aging jet bridges at Charlotte and a reconfiguration of Chicago O’Hare’s Terminal 3 for greater space and access and especially ADA-compliant restrooms.

Smaller airports are in the mix as well, including $700,000 for a new terminal at Standing Rock Airport in North Dakota.
