On a lovely day, I visited Vung Tau, Vietnam, with my friend Sharon Wenzel. We were sailing on the Norwegian Jewel, and seeing this quiet city was the perfect way to spend the day. The pretty seaside town was just what we were looking for as we set out on our own after taking a motor coach from the ship.
We first walked along the waterfront and watched the fishermen and women bringing in the catch. The park was dotted with impressive modern art, and the locals were friendly and eager to greet us.
We also wanted to shop for souvenirs. We headed into the city and found what we were looking for. Because many merchants wouldn’t take credit cards; we stopped at an ATM and were off for a shopping adventure.
We found lacquered jewelry boxes, dragon sculptures, the usual t-shirts, and refrigerator magnets, and dealt with street vendors who were wonderful to talk to and bargain with.
Lunch was another memorable experience. We communicated with the waitress via Google Translate. We pointed at menu pictures for lunch, which included an excellent soup of clear broth, chicken, vegetables, and rice noodles, plus a hearty fruit drink made with mulberries.
All too soon, our day was coming to a close, at least in Vung Tau. We gathered our treasure and headed back to the hotel where the motor coach awaited and back to our lovely ship.
