St. Anton (Sankt Anton, St. Anton am Arlberg) is widely regarded as the
leading ski resort destination in Austria. We visited this famous and
picturesque ski village in the Tyrolean Alps for two days and one night (not in ski season, obviously!) while on our way to our final destination of St. Moritz.
It is known as the ‘cradle of alpine skiing’, and is considered the pioneer of modern skiing. It forms the heart of the largest connected skiing area in Austria, with more than 300 kilometres of marked downhill runs, and 85 lifts and cable cars.
There is no shortage of places to stay in this village as it is packed with
hotels and pensions. If you are not a skier or visiting off-season, there
is still plenty to do.
We chose a cable car to the Gampen mountainous area and did some short hiking. There are many hiking and biking trails with gorgeous views of the valley below. There is a nice shopping area in the heart of the village and the Museum St. Anton am Arlberg chronicles local ski history in a traditional chalet.
