A new colony of chinstrap penguins, not previously known, has been found on a rocky outcrop near Astrolabe Island in Antarctica by a team from a Viking Expedition ship while on a cruise.
The discovery was made by staff of Viking’s scientific partner, Oceanites, a group with long experience in penguin monitoring. During the cruise on board Octantis, the team made a visual and thermal survey of penguins on Astrolabe Island, and found the new colony on Diaz Rock.
Viking’s expedition ships include science partners on each voyage; in addition to their research they take part in the programs for guests that include meaningful scientific research, providing guiding and interpretation during shore excursions and delivering world-class lectures.
