Carnival goes solar at private port in D.R.

Carnival, the world’s largest cruise operator, is now also operating one of the Dominican Republic’s largest solar farms, providing 80% of the power to its Amber Cove private port.

The company says the new facility will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about a thousand tons a year at the port on the north coast, which is regularly visited by ships from four of Carnival’s nine cruise brands—Carnival, Costa, Holland America and Princess. It’s one of eight private ports and islands the company operates.

The occasion also highlighted a surprising statistic: More than half of all cruise visitors to the Dominican Republic were visitors to the Amber Cove private port, rather than to any public Dominican port. Amber Cove features shops, restaurants, limited lodging and swimming pools—but, oddly, no beaches.
