The promised revival of the formerly annual cafe waiters’ race in Paris has been run, and the winners are not only one male and one female waiter, but the city itself, gathering up more pre-Olympic publicity.
The race, which required the 200 or so contestants, in traditional garb, to run a two-kilometre course carrying a tray with a glass of water, a coffee and a croissant.
Men’s winner Samy Lamrous and top waitress Pauline Van Wymeersch walked the 13 minutes 30 seconds and 14 minutes 12 seconds respectively. Van Wymeersch told press that “We do this for 12 hours every day, including weekends and holidays,” and attributed her win to “20 years on the job and good legs.”
