United Airlines has taken a serious step toward addressing problems encountered by travelers traveling with their wheelchairs and mobility devices, and handling problems that do occur when devices are damaged. The steps were planned together with the United Spinal Association, an advocacy group.
United’s website and app now have filters that allow wheelchair users to find the flights that best suit their equipment. The filter system includes the ability to upload dimensions of the wheelchair or powerchair so United can highlight the flights with planes best equipped. United says that if a more expensive flight is needed because of the wheelchair, it will refund the difference.
The airline also announced a pilot program at its home base at Houston that will work to provide better support when chairs are damaged, providing either compatible loaners or accommodations while repairs are made.
Recently, reports have proliferated of airline damage to mobility devices, as many as 10 to 15 thousand a year, placing serious potential roadblocks for many users.
