Sunset, Hilo Bay, Big Island of Hawaii

I’m very fond of sunsets and sunrises.  There’s something special about the soft quality of light this time of day that appeals to me.

Even though it was taken about 15 years ago, this remains one of my favorite sunset photos.  The day had been rainy and cloudy around Hilo, and I had low expectations of seeing a sunset.  About 30 minutes before dark, the clouds began to break apart and we were able to enjoy this incredible view.  The light in the image is completely natural — not altered by filters in any way.  The sky and bay seemed to be ablaze.

If you look closely at the image you can see two of the biggest mountains in the world silhouetted against the setting sun, Mauna Kea to the right and Mauna Loa to the left.
