Dublin’s historic Victorian fruit and vegetable market, closed and empty since 2019, will re-open in the summer of 2026, five years after a previous date fell by the wayside.
The 1892 building closed for renovation and redevelopment, but the original plans fell through. It’s located at a spot that has been an important market since the 1600s, and was built for sanitary reasons, to bring the market in off the streets. It has suffered vandalism and other damage since it closed.
The market is in the Smithfield area of Dublin, where a wide variety of markets and restaurants have been developing.
The Dublin council says when re-opened, the market will have a ‘quintessentially Dublin” feel and be open well into the evening. Previous plans involved private operators controlling the building, but plans now are for the city to operate it or find a non-profit to manage it.
