Canadian officials and the heads of two indigenous nations are working on a plan for a new national park in the Peel River watershed in the Yukon, protecting over 3,000 square kilometers.
The park would permanently protect the area, contribute to the recovery of species at risk, and support the continuation of Indigenous cultural practices for future generations.
The area, where the Snake River joins the Peel, has been home the Gwich’in people and the Nacho Nyak Dun First Nation. It’s also home to an important caribou herd and many other species, some of which have lost habitat elsewhere.
