Airlines are getting a boost on trans-Atlantic traffic as Taylor Swift fans head for Europe, trying to catch seats for the 18-city European cycle of her Eras Tour, which started late last week.
What Expedia is calling “Tour Tourism” is growing as fans realize that with lower prices and more controls on ticket scalping, it’s possible to buy airline and show tickets and come out even or even ahead of catching the show at home. It’s a trend that first appeared among Beyonce fans.
One woman from Ontario, Canada, told the Independent (UK) that she spent $1500 for round-trip air tickets to Hamburg, three nights in a hotel and a seat at Swift’s concert. Back in North America, the same concert seats would have cost her the same $1500.
In Paris, an estimated 20% of the tickets for four sold-out shows went to Americans, and 10,000 are expected in Stockholm.
