A visit to the Desert View Watchtower on the eastern portion of the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. Constructed in the 1930s, it offers magnificent canyon views and a tie to the Native American history of the Canyon.
Why would you build such a magnificent machine, knowing it would be extinct soon? Doesn’t make much sense to me.
I had the same question… and I was told (whether true or not) that it was a question of how soon enough diesel locomotives would be available, given how many truly old steamers needed to be replaced at that point.
