Hong Kong’s waters will see 170 boats and 4,000 rowers competing in the annual Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races on June 15th and 16th, headline event for a series of water-based events in the island city.
The race, with 22-person teams, was first held in 1976 sponsored by the Hong Kong Tourism Board to (of course) promote tourism, but it’s grown into a world-wide modern sport linked to a tradition thousands of years old. There are now regional championships in Asia, Europe and North America leading up to the Hong Kong championship.
Accompanying the big races will be Waterbomb, a Korean event known for music and water fights; S2O, a water music festival and the month’s versions of the Drone and Pyro shows that run monthly at Victoria Harbour.
