Lisbon has a number of scenic viewpoints, or miradors. These are generally places people can gather and enjoy some fresh air and a grand vista. The largest is Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara in the Barrio Alto district, which offers one of the best panoramic views in the city—a view that includes Castelo de São Jorge, innumerable red roofs, several churches, and in the distance the Tagus River.
This viewpoint was built in the 19th century and is located on two levels, part of a beautiful and well cared for garden that includes fountains, flower beds, shade trees, kiosks and places to sit and enjoy a snack or drink.
Mirador de Sao Paulo de Alcantara is immediately adjacent to Elevador da Gloria, a 19th century funicular.
