Disney, Florida make nice on Orlando expansion

New plans for major expansion of Disney World’s parks and resorts in Central Florida are apparently back on track after a couple of years’ uncertainty due to political disputes between Disney and Florida governor Ron DeSantis.

The plans, spread out over 15 years, include a possible fifth major theme park and a 50% increase in the number hotel rooms on Disney property. There’s a $17 billion price tag attached to the plan in the long run.

The overall plan has gotten approval from the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, which DeSantis set up as the state’s oversight on Disney projects for the 17,370 acres it owns. Before the disputes, Disney had more-or-less governmental rights over the area through the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which the state took over and renamed.

The new agreement resolves a variety of lawsuits and threats of legal action between Disney and the state.
