Of the many photos I’ve taken in my life, this is one of my favorites! We were visiting the Grand Canyon for a few days, part of a loop trip through the amazing scenery of the American Southwest that included Monument Valley, Canyonlands, Arches, Bryce and Zion National Parks.
You can’t appreciate the incredible size and scale of the Grand Canyon until you’ve seen it with your own eyes. Photos don’t do it justice but can give you an idea of the beautiful, eroded formations and colors of the place.
Set against this grand backdrop are two of my favorite people, my lovely and beloved wife, Sylvia, snapping a photo of our oldest son, Bryan. It looks like they’re right at the canyon’s edge but they’re actually a good 30 or 40 feet from it. Bryan was 2 years old at that time and so incredibly cute with his Big Bird backpack (he had to carry a water bottle and (toy) camera in it, like daddy did). Today Bryan is married and a software engineer living in Reno. He remains a sweet-natured fellow and is super-smart.
