Selfoss and Dettifoss Waterfalls, Iceland

Dettifoss is often referred to as Europe’s most powerful waterfall—although on some lists it takes second place (after the Rhine Falls). It is, therefore, one of Iceland’s top attractions. Far fewer visitors ever see Selfoss, just a short walk further upstream (south). It is pictured above and in the photo below.

Exactly the same amount of water runs through both falls, but as the drop at Selfoss is much lower than that at Dettifoss, it does not roar in the same way. In my opinion, however, it is the more picturesque of the two. There was nobody else there when we took our photographs, which added to the appeal.

The sides of the path linking the two falls were covered in a variety of unusual (for us, at least) plants.

Below is a photo of Dettifoss. A video would be better, as that would capture the thundering noise.

The final shot is downriver from Dettifoss, along the gorge the river has created for itself.

The waterfalls of Iceland are amazing and so beautiful.  When we visited this area it was pouring rain (drenching), so our views were limited.  Thanks for the nice photos and explanation.
