UK ‘Kiss and Fly’ costing more

You have to pay for tickets, for bags, for seat selection, for more and more else—and now UK airports are raising the cost of having a friend or relative drop you off at the airport, according to a report from the Royal Automobile Club.

The RAC says the charges, which can go as high as £7, are “bordering on the ridiculous” as a charge for “the briefest of stops.” RAC’s report says that 7 of 20 UK airports with fees have raised them since last summer.

The bigger jumps, but a full pound, are at Gatwick (now £6 for 10 minutes), Edinburgh (£5 for 10 minutes), Birmingham (£5 for 15 minutes) and Bristol (£6 for 10 minutes). Three others, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford and Aberdeen, have raised their prices by 50p. London Stansted, which didn’t raise its rate, already gets £7 for 15 minutes. Manchester and Heathrow both charge £5, but Manchester allows only 5 minutes to get the passenger and bags out of the car, while Heathrow has no limit.

RAC official Rod Dennis told reporters that “To have to pay £5, £6 or even £7 for the briefest of stops to simply open the boot and take some luggage out for a friend or loved one is bordering on the ridiculous. Increased charges at airports that have relatively poor public transport access – for instance, no direct rail or tram link – also seems pretty unreasonable.”

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
