The government of Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida wants to build luxury resorts in each of Japan’s 35 national parks with the aim of attracting free-spending foreign visitors away from the country’s big cities.
Over 70% of inbound tourism in Japan is focused on Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, and the government says it would like to spread the tourism wealth around the country, with resorts opening by 2031, the centennial of Japan’s national park system.
The plan is controversial, both because of the idea of building in the parks and the idea of spending government funds for a project like that while real wages have been falling for Japanese workers.
