Porto, Portugal’s second city and anchor of its northern region, has become one of Europe’s biggest attractions, but it’s finding some aspects of its fame just a little too inconvenient, specifically tourist vehicles in the city center.
Starting with a pilot project, the city council has decided, there will be sharp limits on the little tuk-tuks that thrive on visitors looking for a quick way around, as well as limits on where excursion buses can travel and park.
The plan will also curtail routes in the center for the two companies licensed for hop-on hop-off buses.
The tourist ‘road train’ that offers both city tours and port wine tasting tours will not get a license extension past 2026. It is unclear whether that will be a complete stop, since the ‘Magic Train’ leaves the city for the wine tours, crossing by bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wineries are.
