The Blue Rose B&B: A Victorian Dream

The Blue Rose Bed and Breakfast was easy to find in Mt. Morris, New York, a tiny town in the Finger Lakes Region. The blue Victorian House surrounded with flowers is a nice site after a day of travel.

As soon as I was out of the car, I was greeted by innkeepers David and Michele Shaughnessy, a delightful couple with all the warmth you could want for a beautiful stay at a B&B.

I walked past glorious gardens before entering the inn. Its beauty swept me away. It was like walking into a Victorian Dream. Period antiques and decor filled the rooms. Michele tells me the fireplace is from 1892, when the house, built by local builder Peter Aex, was designed.

Blue Rose is one of four Victorian homes in Mt. Morris built by Mr. Aex.

The first owner, Mrs. Hanover’s late husband owned the Mount Morris Illuminating Company, so the house became the first house in Mt. Morris to be installed with electricity.

Michele tells me I am welcome to enjoy the elegant living room and foyer during my stay before she takes me up to the second floor and the elaborate Rose Garden Suite.

Wow!

It is an extension of the elegance of the downstairs—more antiques, more beautiful decor, and three rooms: the bed chamber, a sitting room, and a large bathroom with a jetted soaker tub and separate shower, adding a touch of modern convenience to your pampering experience.

There are two other beautiful guest rooms as well: Fleur-De-Lis Room and Plum Garden Room.

After settling in, I asked about local restaurants. They both suggested Questa Lasagna. I called for a reservation and was lucky they had an opening.

The small space was full of chattering guests eating the dinners.

I will find out soon enough why this is a very popular restaurant.

I had excellent Bruschetta and lasagna that melted in my mouth. For dessert, there was cheesecake.

Back at the B&B, Michelle said the house and interior had been honored by being awarded The Landmark Society of Western New York 2022 Small Business Award for Historic Preservation. The house is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

After an excellent night’s sleep, I had a beautiful and delicious gourmet breakfast. Baked pear, strawberry smoothy, and Eggs Florentine topped the chart.

All too soon, it was time to get on the road again.

If you go:

Blue Rose is minutes from the downtown area with its antique shops and locally owned shops and restaurants.

And Letchworth State Park, renowned as the “Grand Canyon of the East.”

The Genesee River roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs–as high as 600 feet in some places–surrounded by lush forests.

An amazing destination for hiking its 66 trails, horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and special events.
