I’ve been to a number of cities with areas of concentrated street art, as varied as Buenos Aires to Boise. I enjoy studying quality street art for its colors, style, and the artists’ expressions. Street art is frequently changing, or evolving if you prefer, so repeat visits are not a bad idea.
Downtown Rapid City in South Dakota has such a collection in a back lane known as Art Alley, located between 6th and 7th, Main and St. Joseph streets. The first art in the alley was placed in 2003 and art began to multiply the following year, to the point where it was called “Art Alley”.
In 2016, Art Alley became a more formal “Public art collaboration”. It’s now managed by the Rapid City Arts Council and permits are required to place new art in the alley. Seems a little restrictive to me, but I guess it works for the city.
It was a cloudy, windy and rainy day when we visited, but it was still quite interesting. Here’s some of what we saw in Art alley during our visit:
