Berlin Zoo has two new residents, a pair of pandas born last Thursday. For their mother, Meng Meng, it’s her second set of twins. A first set was born in 2019.
The tiny babies, measuring 14 cm and weighing less than 200 grams, have not yet had their sex determined but have been pronounced healthy by zoo vets. Pandas are born naked, deaf, blind and pink, and it takes some time for the creatures’ typical black and white markings to develop.
The public will have to wait quite a while before the cubs make their debut; they are being cared for in a ‘backstage’ area of the panda exhibit.
