California is getting a new train that will jumpstart its efforts to meet its 2045 carbon-free goal for rail transport. The new train, first of several on order, uses a hybrid system of hydrogen fuel cells and storage batteries and produces only water vapor as its exhaust.
It’s a step up from the electric trains California has recently put into service to replace more of its diesel-powered routes. It’s debut route is a five-stop line in San Bernardino. It’s built by Swiss company Stadler
Unlike previous Flirt versions that have run on regional lines in Germany, this one doesn’t need to charge on third rail or overhead power; the fuel cells produce electricity and the system also captures energy from the train’s brakes. It can operate all day without refueling.
