Germany: DTicket renewed, with price hike

Germany’s Deutschlandticket, an all-you-can-ride travel pass for every local and regional bus and rail system in the country, has taken another step toward likely permanent status, but with a €9 a month price hike.

The ticket, which at €49 a month was the 2023-24 follow-on to the famed €9 ticket of 2022, can be bought from any transit operator in the country, and is good everywhere. Germany’s 16 state transport ministers agreed on the new €58 price, which must be subsidized by state and federal funds.

One of the ministers, Oliver Krischer, explained that “The agreement reached at the special conference of transport ministers shows that the federal states want to hold on to the successful Deutschlandticket model and develop it further…. With this price, we will be able to keep the ticket attractive and put its financing on a more solid footing.”

The ticket must be bought as a monthly subscription, although it can be canceled up to the 10th of any month with cancelation taking place with the following month. For visitors to Germany, it can represent serious savings—as long as you remember to cancel it in time.
