Rome’s Trevi Fountain, mostly in the news lately for overcrowding and a plan to charge visitors to view it, will be closed for the next two months while it gets a long-needed cleaning. The fountain dates to the 1700s.
Long famed as the inspiration for the song Three Coins in a Fountain and for the iconic scene of Swedish actress Anita Ekberg in the fountain in Fellini’s movie “La Dolce Vita,” the fountain is getting a thorough cleaning and repair including grouting its joints ahead of an expected 30 million visitors to Rome next year for a Roman Catholic Jubilee year.
While construction is underway, the fountain will continue to be an attraction: workers are already installing a walkway past and above the work to allow a limited number of visitors to serve as sidewalk superintendents.
