Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Stratford-upon-Avon

This quintessential English cottage and a photographer’s delight is located in the former village of Shottery, now a part of greater Stratford-upon-Avon. Originally a farmhouse, the building was the childhood home of William Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway. She was born there sometime around 1556 and it is assumed she stayed there until her marriage to Shakespeare in 1582.

The cottage was not known by its present name until the turn of the nineteenth century, following the success of David Garrick’s Shakespeare Jubilee in 1769. This was when hordes of adoring fans descended on Warwickshire to seek out places associated with the Bard’s private life. The cottage became famous for its romantic connection with Shakespeare and its classical appearance.
