Ryanair is getting rid of printed boarding passes, starting from next May, when it will shut down its airport check-in counters and require digital-only boarding. Dumped along with the paper will be the airline’s infamous fee for printing a boarding pass at the airport for up to €40.
“Our goal is to eliminate check-in counters at the airport, just as we did with baggage counters. Everything will be done through the app, making the process completely digital and eliminating paper,” according to CEO Michael O’Leary.
The airline says that 60% of its check-ins are already online or in the app and will soon hit 80%, and it believes that reaching its 100% goal will not be hard. Ryanair is famous for its no-frills-without-a-fee approach and its cost-reduction strategies.
