Amsterdam is celebrating is 750th birthday in a wide variety of ways, but this one probably takes the cake: the city is offering couples a chance to get married on the ring highway that circles the city, normally filled with speeding traffic.
A major portion of the roadway will be closed next June 21 for a big concert and other festival events, and weddings have now been added to the mix. Interested couples, who must be local residents, can sign up now. City registrars will perform the ceremonies in either Dutch or English.
City officials say that if there’s more interest than there is room for, lots will be drawn and winning couples will be notified if they’ve won one of the limited spots.
UPDATE
The numbers are in: Over 400 couples have signed in for on-the-road weddings!
Applications closed December 1, and a lottery will determine which couples get the limited number of slots.
