Drink a smoothie, save the world…

That’s the premise being offered by Eurowings, one of Lufthansa’s low-cost subsidiaries. It’s offering a €20 smoothie with a catchy name and an environmental claim.

According to the airline, profits from the pricy smoothie will go toward use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), reducing 10% of flight-related CO2 emissions. Eurowings says that one smoothie offsets the carbon emissions for one passenger on an average flight

The name is a play on words; SAF for the fuel, but ‘Saft’ is also the German word for juice. SAF (the fuel) is produced from waste such as used cooking oils; SAFt (the smoothie) is produced from strawberry, currant and honeyberry juices.
