In Japan, an ‘industrial lights’ cruise

In Kawasaki City, Japan, there’s a light show like no other: it takes its viewers out to sea to view it, and the lights are the lights of the city’s huge factory zones.

Just south of Tokyo’s border, Kawasaki City is a mass of shopping outlets, historic sites, and one of Japan’s leading industrial zones. Industry has driven the city’s growth for more than a century.

The tour operates only on Saturday evenings, with the time shifting with seasonal hours of night-time. Picnicking on board is popular, though alcohol is prohibited. The two-hour-long tour is in Japanese, but private charters in English can be arranged.
