More travelers to pay UK’s ETA fee in January

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system will expand January 1 to include travelers from more countries. Travelers planning to visit the UK will need to apply on line for the £10 permit that is good for two years from issuance.

The system, similar to the U.S. ESTA program and systems due soon from the EU, are not a visa, but rather a heads-up to the host country with the traveler’s details and contact information, although, like a visa, it could be denied.

The UK’s system went into effect some months ago for Gulf Cooperation Council states, and will add the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and more on January 8. The requirement will be extended to EU citizens in April.

UK officials say it can take up to three business days to process an ETA, which requires uploading a photo as well. The application can be completed on UK government websites and apps.
