Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, Oct. 9: Norway’s Fjords

1-FjordenCruise ship is dwarfed by steep mountains as it enters Norway’s Naeroyfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord in the rugged coastal mountains north of Bergen. A network of these deep waterways connects scattered areas of small towns and farms on Norway’s west coast.

Popular with cruisers and day-trippers, these fjords offer many cruises, day-trips and ferries; many of the small towns along the fjords depend on the ferries and express-boats for their communication in winter when roads are closed.

The popular “Norway in a Nutshell” routes include this area, starting from either Oslo or Bergen, and often include the Flamsbana, a spectacular mountain rail route with corkscrew tunnels that connects the Bergen-Oslo railroad line high above the fjords with Flam on the edge of the Aurlandfjord.

Bergen itself is worth a visit: a fairly small city with a cosmopolitan air and a long history as a seat of the Hanseatic League and as Norway’s one-time capital and principal city.
