We encountered large troops of baboons while on safari in Africa, nowhere more so than in Chobe National Park. There were large numbers of lions in Chobe and the baboons on the whole were nervous and on edge, very alert to the slightest sound of a predator. Baboons elsewhere seemed a little more relaxed.
The above highlighted picture is of an elderly statesman baboon who seems to have experienced life in full and now is above it all. A grandfather; a professor among his peers. This old male baboon just had a very knowing and soulful gaze, like he’d seen it all and you couldn’t surprise him with anything anymore. It was one of my favorite pics of that journey!
When they’ve had enough to eat and are resting, primates like to groom each other and the second photo shows a small group doing this, including a cute little baby baboon!
