Even in winter, fresh produce at the daily market in Aix-en-Provence. Aix has markets for flowers, books and more on different days of the week—but the daily vegetable and fruit market in Pl. Richelme has been in operation since the 14th century. HERE is more information on the markets of Aix. Even a rainy day (below) doesn’t stop the market. These pictures were taken in late February; in summer the market is much larger.
Visiting local markets is one of the highlights of every trip for us. We usually rent apartments, even for 3-day stays, so we can take advantage of the markets for a taste of local varieties and cheeses. The large cities, like Paris and Barcelona, have many daily markets all round the city, but even the smallest towns will have a market at least a couple of days a week. This coming summer, we’ll be arriving in St. Remy de Provence, scene of a major market, on market day…and our apartment is right around the corner—if we can get to it!
It’s farmer’s market day on TravelGumbo! Love the photos and story, PHeymont, thanks!
