Situated atop a high plateau (3,870m, 12,700 ft) in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal is the Tengboche Monastery . It’s a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, the largest in the area, serving the Sherpa community. It was constructed in 1916 and has a difficult path, being destroyed in 1934 by an earthquake (rebuilt), again destroyed but by fire in 1989 (again rebuilt and still standing).
Tengboche monastery is situated amidst the tallest peaks in the world, in beautiful Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). It offers outstanding views of the following famous Himalayan peaks: Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku.
The monastery can only reached on foot and is usually approached by a mountain trail from Namche Bazaar. Tengboche is midway on the hike to the base camp for the climbers of Mount Everest. We spent a nice night camping on the monastery grounds, right beside the place Yaks were tied up for the evening. A memorable time with incomparable scenery.
