Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, March 23, 2015: Dawn at Sheffield Camp, Mt. Kilimanjaro

One of the most memorable mornings I’ve ever experienced was at Sheffield camp on the Shira route of Mt. Kilimanjaro.  When the sun set the night before, we were on a dry desert plateau around 15,000 ft above sea level.  When we awoke the next morning there was a blanket of fresh powdery snow covering the rocks, grass, and our tents.  At this altitude you’re above most of the clouds, so you have the unique experience of watching sunrise from that vantage point.

It was a little cold but not at all windy and very beautiful!  From then on, until we’d summited and begun our descent, we were walking in a world of ice and snow.  It was a fascinating experience!
