The Brothers Grimm are known to most of us as authors of some of our most famous fairy tales, including Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel, but Germans also know them as authors of the first-ever published dictionary of the German language.
Starting Sept. 4, in their adopted hometown of Kassel, everyone will have a chance to explore that experience at Grimmwelt (World of Grimm), a new $20 million museum that explores both their role as collectors and authors of folk tales and their work as pioneering lexicographers.
The museum’s lobby features words, projected on the walls and constantly changing; over the course of 100 days to show all 318,000 words of the Grimm dictionary, published after their deaths. By perhaps no coincidence, the theme continues through the…wait for it…26 rooms of artifacts and modern works connected to the Grimms. They range from furniture from their home, to original documents, to modern artworks commissioned for the project, including one by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, a recent arrival in Germany.
