The five tiny towns of Italy’s iconic Cinque Terre are among the world’s most popular tourist attractions, but now local officials are saying “Enough!” A system will be in place this summer to limit access to the coastal pathways that link them.
The five towns—Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore—are all located inside a UNESCO World Heritage national park. Park authorities are working at determining the number of visitors who will be allowed; they believe the number may be more than one million too high at present.
Visitors will be required to buy an access card online, in advance. Only those with cards will be admitted, and even they will face limits: When any particular pathway reaches a limit, visitors will be told to return the next day.
